How to celebrate the Royal Wedding in Chichester

The Royal wedding is fast approaching as well as the

plethora of bank holidays that are coming along with the combination of Easter

and the wedding.

If at any point at all recently you have been walking

through Chichester city centre, you will have noticed the abundance of union

flag items for sale as the Royal Wedding is fast approaching. As the shops of

the city and the nation are getting behind this event, I thought I would

provide you with some particular places in Chichester that are getting into the

wedding spirit in case you feel like celebrating with them.

Now the first thing that springs to mind when thinking about

Royal Weddings has to be the idea of getting out there in the open and having

some good old fashioned street parties! I phoned Chichester District Council to

ask how many had been officially booked for the Royal Wedding and was told that

within Chichester and the surrounding areas there have been 11 street parties

booked. 4 of these are happening in Chichester on Beech Avenue, Cawley Road,

Westgate and Orchard Avenue. Street parties are really unlike anything else

that goes on these days and are a great way of doing something out of the

ordinary to celebrate the wedding!

If you would like some Great British entertainment for the

evening of the Royal Wedding, Fontwell Park Racecourse a putting on a Royal

Wedding Racenight where there will be plenty of entertainment provided. On top

of the obvious enjoyment of a racenight, the evening will also feature the

Magic of Take That and Robbie Tribute Band playing live. Races start at 5.40pm

and the celebration will reach its climax with a firework display at end the

night. It is sure to be a Great British celebration with the atmosphere not

wholly unlike that of a street party.

As I mentioned, unless you live underground or in a secluded

bunker, you must have noticed that almost every shop in Chichester has a

section of Royal Wedding related items. Granted, some of the things that have

gone on sale are just down right tacky and ridiculous such as this Royal

Wedding fridge-freezer.

However here is a (very short!) list of some places in Chichester selling some

slightly more tasteful memorabilia: Cath Kidston, Past Times, British

Heart Foundation, M&S, Millets, Accessorize, W H Smith and plenty more –

just pop into town and you will see!

If you are putting on a Royal Wedding party for yourself and

you need some party cups and the like then Pink Pig Party Shop and M&S

have got some great stuff in store.

One of my favourite ideas that I have seen is the Slug and

Lettuce who from the 22nd April to 2nd May are selling

classic English afternoon tea and scones. Not far from them, Trents are making

more of the actual day by having British themed specials on their menu on the

29th and are discounting Pimms and Greene King.

Clearly then a range of places are getting in on the act of

celebrating the wedding in a variety of ways. I understand that there is plenty

of British cynicism out there and many of us are not at all interested in

celebrating the Royal Wedding but for those of us who are interested I hope

this will be of some use to you!

I am quite the Royalist myself and to put it simply I cannot wait for the wedding tomorrow!

I personally am a bit of a mixed bag when I consider the hype of the Royal Wedding. There is a small cynical part of me that views the hype and holidays as a bit of propaganda from the government in attempt to get the nation to forget the depression of the cuts for a couple of weeks. Then I think about it some more and I am actually slightly excited by the prospect of the Royal Wedding and what's the point of being boring and cynical when we could all just make the most of some extra holiday!
