EN-GB">The peregrine falcon chicks that are nesting on Chichester Cathedral have
hatched and the webcam continues to be of interest to locals.
On Wednesday 13th April a webcam went live
recording a pair of peregrine falcons after they have nested on Chichester
Cathedral for the last 11 years. Click here for more information on
the history of the pair and for the idea of the webcam.
Developments have taken place in this intriguing story as four
new chicks have been hatched. The family are in a healthy state and if all
these chicks are successfully fledged then the total number of chicks raised by
the pair could rise to as many as 38 – that’s some good parenting by any
standards!
The home of the family is a nestbox which has been provided
by the Sussex Ornithological Society for the past nine years.
The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal in the world and
it normally reaches speeds of 180mph but the fastest recorded peregrine was
recorded in the Guinness Book of Records reaching an incredible 217mph! That’s
not bad when you consider that Lewis Hamilton’s top speed down a start/finish
line is around 197mph!!
The project which is run by the Royal Society for the
Protection of Birds (RSPB) has thus far been run from Cloisters Café but will move out on to the Cathedral Green by the end of May in time to see
the chicks learning to fly.
