A joint road safety awareness campaign held last week in Fishbourne and Southbourne saw 34 drivers stopped for committing various offences.
The campaign is called Operation Airwalk and it is an initiative between Sussex Police and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. The targets during the operation were drivers who were either driving at excess speed; using their mobile phones or not wearing their seatbelts. The drivers were then given the opportunity to watch an educational video highlighting the dangers of their offences as an alternative to a fixed penalty notice.
The operation was held last Thursday (2 February) in Southbourne and Fishbourne and all 34 motorists whowere stopped chose to watch the video.
PC Andy Rosier said: "Anti social driving is a priority for both the Fishbourne and Southbourne Neighbourhood Management Panels and we receive a lot of complaints from the local community regarding these issues. We all have a responsibility to keep our roads safe and being aware of local speed limits is a large part of this. We are hoping to carry out more of these operations in the near future."
What do you think about the operation? Do you think it is a good idea or do you think that the drivers should have no alternative to a fixed penalty sentence?
