Police have asked for closure of Thursdays Nightclub

As a result of an increase in the number of serious assaults, police have asked for Thursdays Night Club in Chichester to be temporarily closed.

Police say that since December 2009, there has been an increase in violent crime offences both inside and outside the club and it is for this reason that Chief Inspector Ali Darge is asking that the Nightclub be shut for at least six weeks so that new procedures can be implemented. 

The facts and figures certainly present the police with a strong argument: officers have been called to the club 12 times since January this year including 8 assaults, three of which resulted in customers receiving injuries from glass bottles. Police also allege another occasion where a customer had been ejected from the club by doorstaff and had received severe head injuries as a result which were amounting to grevious bodily harm. All in all, officers say that Thursdays has the highest level of incidents within the Chichester district. 

The force claim that they have already made 'exhaustive efforts' to support and offer guidance including organising a number of meetings but all to no avail. A meeting was heldon April 9 2010  between club management, police and members of the district council's licensing department in which managers were asked to contact the police when an assault took place on the premises. It has emerged that since this meeting there may be evidence to suggest that there have been failures to report some crimes inside the club. 

A hearing is due on Thursday July 28 but until then it will be a wait-and-see game for both parties involved.
